The Thirty-Nine fuses a classic surfboard shape with colors reminiscent of early surf culture and then injects itself with a modern approach to board construction and performance.

It’s as if this country’s fate and culture are hot blooded lovers poised on the verge of an outburst, ready to tear each other apart, and neither one knows whether it will be fighting or fucking.
You know it's not going to get fixed that way. It's like pushing on string. You need some yanking ability, I think, with string.
The Minton Hill House strikes a delicate balance between the engaging of its panoramic hilltop position and the provision of a protective domestic environment. The house is at once an environmental filter, a view-framing device, and a series of interior and exterior gardens and courts.
The baker in the medieval town square must holler “fresh rolls” if he hopes to feed the townfolk.
Anything that doesn't take years of your life and drive you to suicide hardly seems worth doing.
Nothing gets you as focused on solving a problem than actually having that problem.
If you don’t feel that you are possibly on the edge of humiliating yourself, of losing control of the whole thing, then probably what you are doing isn’t very vital.
People are taking the piss out of you everyday. They butt into your life, take a cheap shot at you and then disappear. They leer at you from tall buildings and make you feel small. They make flippant comments from buses that imply you’re not sexy enough and that all the fun is happening somewhere else. They are on TV making your girlfriend feel inadequate. They have access to the most sophisticated technology the world has ever seen and they bully you with it. They are The Advertisers and they are laughing at you.
You, however, are forbidden to touch them. Trademarks, intellectual property rights and copyright law mean advertisers can say what they like wherever they like with total impunity.
Fuck that. Any advert in a public space that gives you no choice whether you see it or not is yours. It’s yours to take, re-arrange and re-use. You can do whatever you like with it. Asking for permission is like asking to keep a rock someone just threw at your head.
You owe the companies nothing. Less than nothing, you especially don’t owe them any courtesy. They owe you. They have re-arranged the world to put themselves in front of you. They never asked for your permission, don’t even start asking for theirs.
No young person on earth is so excellent in all respects as to need no uncritical love. Good Lord – as youngsters play their parts in political tragedies of casts of billions, uncritical love is the only real treasure they can look for.
The Ride is an all encompassing read. We know that most people who share our obsession with bikes don’t want to be pigeon-holed as roadies, freeriders, track racers, BMXers, XC riders or even commuters. They are just riders. So we wanted to create something for them, and also for us. Something that crosses both cycling and international borders.
Download the entire, beautifully designed, Issue 1 as a PDF. I highly recommend it.
We know it's out there. Our best art hints at it. Poetry leans into it. Great sex makes it sticky and palpable. True spiritual awakenings rest at its feet. Meditation sometimes lets you hear it breathe.
Inside trains, humans are imitating sardines, while drivers stall and stew in their own exhaust. The cyclist however is completely free, in motion, almost flying, a huge smile wiped across their face.
Artist D.A. Therrien has been creating dramatic, high-voltage art spectacle performances in Europe, Asia and North America since 1983. His work utilizes machines, computers, information displays, high intensity light, robotics and live electricity in complex interactions with human performers/operators.
Designed to be enveloped by climbing plants, the restrained timber façade will evolve as it weathers to a silvery grey. The house surrounds two courtyards, giving a strong sense of arrival via a ‘gangplank’ where one can ceremoniously retreat from working life.
Take a look at some of the great paintings by local Phoenix artist and friend Fausto Fernandez.

This piece is showing at Legend City Studios as part of “Chaos Theory 10”, which is showcasing the work of more than 50 artists. If you are in the area, head down the studio (located at 521 West Van Buren St.) for a look—the scale and detail of this painting are best experienced in person.
Our dedication to design and community life sets us apart and empowers us to create unforgettable spaces that grip the imagination. Architecture is the art of collaboration and the harmony resulting from culture and place. It is this belief that allows GBA to create interiors and exteriors that are a joy to inhabit.
One of her ecstatic paintings is on the wall across from the foot of my bed, and it’s really great to wake up to in the morning.
A carefully considered response to a very steep site with understated ‘mute’, gently sloping, roughly rendered walls and a curved concrete roof. Celebrating modern Australian family life, a generosity of space without ostentation that is practical and serviceable. In association with Susi Leeton Architects.
At the top I claimed to be an authority and that I knew what the fuck I was talking about. That’s still very true – If you think you’re an authority you’re wrong. Take it from me, I’m the authority on authority and if you think you know better then eventually you’ll be in for a really big shock.
Legendary graffiti artist DELTA updates his website with a ton of new work. His work expands far beyond the classic concept of “graffiti” into the realms of sculpture and architecture. Read this interview to learn more.
Permalink… I want a typeface to take control of a situation. Smack me around a little and tell me what’s wrong with my body, then sell me a TV stand and make me assemble it myself without any tools or clothes, all the while throwing meatballs and lingonberry at my problem areas.
Typography humor from the one and only Lonely Sandwich. He of You Look Nice Today fame, and creator of The Fishstick.
PermalinkPermalinkCardon Copy, takes the vernacular of self-distributed fliers and tear-offs we have all seen in our neighborhoods. It involves hijacking these unconsidered fliers and redesigning them, over powering their message with a new visual language. Both the concept and the execution of this project are excellent. I especially like number 14, No Parking and number 18, Watch Found.
Jim Coudal is a truly inspiring character, with a unique perspective on business and creativity. His company, Coudal Partners, is not only a well respected design agency, but has also developed many successful products and services, most notably The Deck advertising network, as well as Field Notes notebooks. He often stresses the importance of writing, as well as letting go of the fear of failure.
People always ask, “What is your greatest failure?” I always have the same answer – We’re working on it right now, it’s gonna be awesome!
This short film is a collaboration between animator Run Wrake, and Veer, the design resource warehouse. The film has a cool, retro quality, using old halftone images from CSA Images.
PermalinkPermalink…let us remember these sage words of Abraham Lincoln: “It has been my experience that those with no vices have very few virtues.”
John Gruber posits that news organization need to evolve into leaner, more efficient operations where the majority of the staff are actually creating content. Old-school news companies aren’t like that — the editorial staff makes up only a fraction of the total head count at major newspaper and magazine companies. The question these companies should be asking is, “How do we keep reporting and publishing good content?” Instead, though, they’re asking “How do we keep making enough money to support our existing management and advertising divisions?” It’s dinosaurs and mammals.
PermalinkCertainly something I need to work on.
PermalinkA set of animated loops made out of wood. Music by Metronomy.
A nice, clean portfolio for 22 year old designer Tami Churns. Great use of color and typography.
PermalinkConvert is a NYC based Green Roof Service. The site, which showcases some great examples of green roofs, was beautifully designed by Swissmiss and developed by Aldenta.
PermalinkChange is a wave you can ride or drown under, but you can’t just sit on the beach, eating Dippin’ Dots and listening to Skynyrd. That’s not how it works. So, even if you’re mostly secure right now, and even if you’re mostly doing what you like, just think about what a big change would mean and how you’d ride it.
Nice illustration style by Spanish artist and designer Borja Bonaque.
PermalinkFirst and foremost, Inconsolata is a humanist sans design. I strove for the clarity and clean lines of Adrian Frutiger’s Avenir (the lowercase “a”, in particular, pays homage to this wonderful design), but also looked to Morris Fuller Benton’s Franklin Gothic family for guidance on some of my favorite glyphs, such as lowercase “g” and “S”, and, most especially, the numerals. Clearly a lot of thought and care went into the design of this monospace font. If you are writing code or working in the terminal, try replacing your default with this one, which happens to be free. I am using it at 14 point with ant-aliasing on, and it’s gorgeous.
This is an interesting article about combating form spam, using ten techniques other than CAPTCHAs, which are the extra fields a lot of sites use to verify that the user is an actual human and not a spam bot. They add an extra step for the user, and can be frustrating, especially if the words you are asked to type are hard to read. This article explains ways to avoid their use, and still cut down on spam significantly.
PermalinkPretty cool visualization of travel data pulled from Twitter and mapped with Processing. It seems like more and more of the data visualization work I see online is being done in Processing.
PermalinkThese infographics are stunning. I love seeing that much data organized in such a fashion, it really is a beautiful thing. The Domain Name System is shocking in its complexity, but the map is easy to read and understand. Very inspiring.
PermalinkOne my favorites from back in the day is back with a new reel for 2009. I haven’t visited in a long time, but it looks like they have a new site (meh) and a lot of new work (whoa). I particularly like the title sequence for Kite Runner.
PermalinkFirefly Press, now in Somerville, MA, was started by Carl Kay right after he graduated from Harvard.
This page demonstrates how to use overflows and jQuery to slide elements side to side, as well as how to click and drag an element. It also includes links to a couple of screencasts showing the effects and how they were achieved.

Merlin Mann uses the Kutiman ThruYou videos as an example of what can be done with a little disregard for the status quo, and a whole lot of creativity.

PermalinkOn my ideal date, a pretty lady laughs at my jokes over a delicious meal. We end the night by making passionate love. On my dream date, my 7th grade science teacher points and laughs at my teeth as they slowly crumble into the gravy boat. Our sommelier, Nick Nolte, brings us a bottle of live ants.
Another Drupal meetup in Phoenix; two months in a row! This time we are meeting on the ASU campus, and it should be quite interesting:
PermalinkChris Yates will be giving a presentation about the scientific and publishing applications he and his team are building with Drupal at the Mars Space Flight Facility at ASU.
Cool interface at motion studio Killers.
I like how the messy, 3D project selection mode gives way to the simple, ordered project detail mode. The circular video control is pretty unique, too.
Website by Grafikonstruct from Brazil.
Beautiful light paintings made with multi-colored flourescent bulbs.
Readability is a javascript bookmarklet that strips away all the clutter on a web page and just presents the main content in a nice, easy-to-read fashion. When you visit the site to grab the bookmark, you can choose between a variety of styles with which to present web content when you are browsing. It seems to work fairly reliably, although it works best on pages that are focused on one story or piece of content as opposed to a variety of content.
PermalinkCool, vibrant, creepy and sexy. Interesting photography by L.A.-based Alex Prager. Flash-based site designed by the now defunct Mocoro.
This is a hot little time-tracking and invoicing solution for the Mac. It has a built in timer with idle-time recognition, and it lets you customize the invoice templates.
PermalinkGoogle has set up a page (who knows maybe its been around for a while) where you can test out any of the popular javascript libraries (jQuery, Mootools, Dojo) as well as the Google APIs, such as Charts, Maps, etc. I have a feeling I will be on this page a lot as I hone my javascript chops.
PermalinkXML Sitemap is a Drupal module that generates a sitemap which conforms to the sitemaps.org XML sitemap protocol. The version for 6.x is still under development, but it appears to be very active.
PermalinkA nice runthrough of how to use jQuery to implement the Google Code syntax highlighter, prettify.js. Going to implement this on okay-plus.com.
PermalinkThis is a quick little jQuery script that test for the presence of a font on the client, by comparing the width of two spans of the same text, one is a monospace control, and the other is assigned the font. If the font is not present, the text defaults to monospace, and therefore would have the same width as the control. Clever.
PermalinkThis is an amazing looking jQuery plugin that ties in with the ‘canvas’ element to allow arbitrary rotation of images in the browser.
